About Super Seniors Trophy
In 2011, an Elm Park Golf & Sports Club member, a previously active inter-club golfer but now approaching 70 years of age, suggested to the Mens Golf Committee (MGC) that Elm Park might sponsor a competitive inter-club competition for men over 70 who would enjoy being competitive again against others in the same age grouping. His proposal was considered and accepted and in 2012, the Men’s Golf Committee inaugurated the Elm Park Super Seniors Trophy. Eight clubs, including Elm Park, participated that year with Dun Laoghaire defeating Newlands in the Final.
News of the success of the competition spread quickly. By 2020 over forty golf clubs were now playing and by 2026 over fifty clubs are participating. Due to its popularity, Elm Park felt comfortable at this stage to abbreviate the title of the tournament to Super Seniors Trophy. Feedback from clubs and players continues to say that the popularity of the event is due mainly to the fact that players have been given the opportunity to play inter-club golf and are competing against men of similar age.
Format of the competition is Scotch Foursomes and the Rules and ethos of golf apply. Teams of 5-pairs each are drawn in groups and initially play on a league or round robin basis. Depending on the level of entry, teams will play at least 4 pool matches, either at home or away to determine group winners who will then proceed to the knockout stages.
While matches are played in a competitive manner, the intended spirit of the competition demands that matches are played in a friendly manner with players and team managers being courteous and respectful to their opposites.
The Final is played in and hosted by Elm Park. A Presentation Dinner follows for both teams and their respective Club Officers and concludes with presentation of the Super Seniors Trophy and Pennant.
We continue to encourage Golf Clubs who have not yet entered a team in this competition to do so and give their super senior members an opportunity to continue their golfing days with competitive inter club golf and some associated social interaction.
