CEC Christmas Message

(19 Dec 2018)

Dear Fellow Member

As we approach the end of 2018, on behalf of the Clubhouse Enhancement Committee (CEC), I am writing to give you a brief update on the building project.

Work commenced in late October and our contractors, Castlerock, have been committing significant resources to the project.

In most areas, Castlerock’s work has been progressing to plan. However, in a few instances they have encountered some issues that could not have been foreseen until construction began.

When digging to lay the foundations for the new Pro Shop, the builders encountered a warren of pipes and drains, some dating back to the time of the original construction of Nutley House.  Each of the pipes had to be assessed to ascertain which were functioning and which redundant.  This, along with the task of removing the old drains, caused an amount of delay.

As you may recall from the plans for the Men’s locker room, the stairs to the showers were to be removed so as to leave them level with the floor in the changing area.  The amount of solid concrete beneath the floor of the old shower room was more than twice what had been anticipated; an issue that required the deployment of additional digging equipment and the temporary removal of part of the gable wall.

Finally, as some of you may have seen, when the ceiling in the corridor running from the entrance to the Ladies’ locker room to the Men’s was removed, a ‘spaghetti’ of electrical wires and cables was revealed.  These appear to be the legacy of an accumulation over the years of ad hoc responses to the need for additional power points etc. but they represent a safety hazard that has to be remedied.

On a positive note, the CEC is hopeful that through a revised plan for the water tank, the financial implications of this may not be as severe as was first thought and as mentioned in the Board’s communication of 24th October 2018.

The CEC is assessing the implications of all of the above matters in terms of potential delay and cost and we hope to provide further information at the Club AGM in January.

We are very conscious of the sub-optimal facilities which all of us have to deal with while construction is ongoing and we have emphasised to our professional team and the contractors the primacy of having our changing facilities in particular back as soon as possible.

I would like to thank my fellow members of the CEC for the enormous time and effort they are putting into the committee’s work.  We have also received some very valuable input on technical and other issues from a small number of members to whom we are most grateful.

I wish you all a peaceful Christmas and health and happiness in the New Year.
