Background to Group

The Art Group was established twenty years ago. Members of Elm Park who had an interest in painting first raised the idea for an art exhibition with the Entertainment Committee of 1993. Subsequently, Yvonne Burke and Primrose O’Connell got together and organised an exhibition which took place in February 1994. Shortly after that, the Art Group was formed with the late, and much loved, Marie Deignan at the helm.

As President of the Art Group, Marie was its guide and mentor over the years and it has grown into an active and vibrant group. Its primary purpose is to facilitate and encourage the development and exploration of the art of painting and to display the work of members at an annual exhibition. Its secondary purpose is to incorporate a social dimension into these activities.

Various events which have taken place over the years have fostered this objective. Such events have included painting demonstrations given by visiting artists, trips to Cabra Castle in Co. Cavan, where golf and painting was the order of the day, an annual golf competition for members followed by a lunch and an annual Christmas dinner in Elm Park. The Group has a useful collection of videos and DVDs on painting techniques which are readily available to members.

The Art Group meets every Friday morning to paint in the function room, where the light is perfect, from 10am to lunchtime. Individuals paint as they wish. The tea break provides an enjoyable opportunity to share news and views, though topics may not always be related to the world of art! The group itself is not a teaching class but the more experienced members are always very willing to offer advice and guidance to those who are starting off. In this regard, it is advisable to have taken some painting lessons before joining the group.

The high point of the year for the Art Group is the annual exhibition held in the Spring. It is organised by members of the Group and accepts paintings from all members of Elm Park Club. The Club itself provides a great deal of support for this popular event and hopefully it will continue to flourish for many years to come.
